Sing and search

Have a song stuck in your head that you don't know the title or who sang it? Well, if you can hum it, a melody-based search launched by Naiyo Media Inc. can find it (or at least that's the claim of the Korean outfit).

Called Humming Search, the tool is supposed to be able to identify songs by listening to you hum a few bars into the microphone. It will process your input to locate possible match on the Internet by searching Napster and if found, it will provide a link where you can listen to the real version and buy a download.

But this is where the wonders of technology cease. While the concept of a melody-based search is cool, the implementation leaves a lot to be desired. First off, Humming Search only works with Internet Explorer. That's a minor inconvenience if you consider the limited music library offered by Napster. Chances are, even if you hum perfectly in tune, you may not be able to find the song you have in mind through Napster. It would be better if Naiyo extends the search to iTunes or other online music store.

Or, if you want a short cut, try humming to a friend and see if he/she knows. It might be much faster that way.
