Chaos theory
Jeremy Gutsche, Chief Trend Hunter of TrendHunter.com, may not have been the first to write about the dynamics of the current economic turmoil, but his new book, Exploiting Chaos: 150 Ways to Spark Innovation During Times of Change, documents the many exploits you could make in these uncertain times.
Wonderfully illustrated with easily digestible snippets that mirror the trend of Twitter's 140-character-limit and the attention span required to read those, Exploiting Chaos outlines four tactics (Culture of Revolution, Trend Hunting, Adaptive Innovation, and Infectious Messaging) to adapt quickly to changes and is filled with vivid stories of how remarkable companies have risen from chaos. Jeremy's contrarian approach in this book is a refreshing change to the gloom and doom dished out by mainstream media these days. You can take comfort in the fact that "Once you accept the inevitability of perpetual change, you can abandon your quest to gain control, and instead, go with the flow."
Exploiting Chaos is slated for release on September 1, but through a special arrangement with TrendHunter, you can download chapter 1 of the book for free.

I'm back!
My blog has magically reappeared, having gone AWOL for almost a week. Because of this, the pagerank for my blog has gone down to 0. Bloody hell!
Also, it seems that the people at Blogger can login to your account without your knowledge and forcibly remove widgets and the underlying HTML codes. So much for "do no evil".

Can you handle the truth?
Do you have what it takes to be a tobacco executive? Check out the 7-section Flash video on thetruth.com to find out. Or play games such as "Urea Collector", "Tough Love" and "Addictor Click".
The site uses a bunch of interesting content to combat the slick advertising employed by Big Tobacco and show how cigarette manufacturers have repeatedly deceived the public about the health implications of smoking.
It's no wonder the cigarette industry is the only industry that sees a payoff when its product kills its customers, and thinks it's a good thing. That's one hell of a customer retention strategy.

Know which side your bread is buttered
A description of Harvard University by Chris Langan (from Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers) that pretty much sums up the situation at SPH and the rest of the government machinery in Singapore:
"The people running it are not necessarily searching for truth and knowledge. They want to be big shots, and when you accept a paycheck from these people, it is going to come down to what you want to do and what you feel is right versus what the man says you can do to receive another paycheck. When you're there, they got a thumb right on you. They are out to make sure you don't step out of line."

Does it have to be Bill Clinton?
Bill Clinton may be getting all the credit for the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, two female American journalist detained by North Korea, but there may be a reason why it has taken so long for the hostage situation to be resolved:
Years ago, police documented something called the Stockholm syndrome. Robbers had held up a bank in Sweden and held the patrons and employees hostage. After days of negotiations, the captives were freed and emerged from the bank enraged - at the cops. Psychologists determined that a lifeboat mentality develops between hostages and their captors. Them and us, with them being the police outside screwing things up. Since that time, hostage negotiators have been trained to slow everything down, play for time, because the bad guys are very reluctant to hurt the people with whom they have bonded.
